The mon (family crest) of two great Hojo clans.  The early Hojo came to prominence after the death of Minamoto Yoritomo the first Shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate.  Yoritomo's beloved wife was Hojo Masako who was instrumental in the Hojo's rise.  The Hojo established themselves as the most powerful and influential family of the Kamakura period, until the were all but wiped out by Nitta Yoshisada and Ashikaga Takauji in 1333.  The second great Hojo clan or the Go-Hojo were a great power during the Sengoku period, founded by the Daimyo Hojo Soun.  It is said that he was a ronin by the name of Ise Shinkuro that conquered the province of Izu and established himself as Hojo, taking the early Hojo's mon and name.  His many sons brought great power to the Go-Hojo and they were most assuredly a force to be reckoned with.  Many historians regard Hojo Soun to be the first of the Sengoku era daimyo.

Almost all mon can be found to be used by many different samurai throughout the centuries.
